The French prepositions depuis, pendant, and--far less commonly--pour each express the duration of an event in French a little differently, with the result that many English speakers mix up depuis and pendant and overuse pour. If you've ever watched French movies or television, or chatted with native speakers, you have almost certainly heard pas (or another negative adverb) without ne, as this is a typical characteristic of informal and familiar French. Although it is nearly always written, ne is often dropped in spoken French.

The French imperfect (imparfait) is a descriptive past tense which indicates an ongoing state of being or a repeated or incomplete action. The beginning and end of the state of being or action are not indicated, and the imparfait is very often translated into English as "was" or "was ___-ing."
